From singing to the cows to sharing songs across Austin and beyond
Texas native Sidney Kenley is an Austin-based singer-songwriter crafting songs that are both intimate and anthemic, blending raw emotion with melodies that linger. Raised on a cattle ranch and surrounded by bluegrass and country, she's now claiming her space in the storytelling of Americana and the introspection of indie rock, all while keeping the heart of her ranch roots alive. Her debut EP Vacancy, releasing in Summer 2025, explores the quiet bravery of emotional openness, with four tracks tracing a journey from self-discovery to goodbye—making space for love, loss, and everything we hold close. With a voice that’s as vulnerable as it is powerful, Sidney invites you into her world where storytelling and emotion collide, and every lyric feels lived-in.
Sidney grew up on a working cattle ranch in small-town East Texas, where she serenaded cows long before she sang for crowds. With a Texas fiddler as a grandfather, she was immersed in bluegrass and country music from a young age. Her first performances were in the church choir, learning harmonies and gaining early stage experience. With two older brothers who tired quickly of her constant singing, Sidney often took her voice outside, finding her first audience in the open pastures.
As a teenager, she picked up the guitar to accompany herself and soon became a regular performer at church services and community events, and won the local Piney Woods Talent Show. In college, she performed for audiences of up to 4,000, but when she moved to Austin in 2014, she pressed pause on her musical ambitions to pursue a career in social work.
For eight years, Sidney poured herself into the Girls Empowerment Network, a local nonprofit dedicated to helping young girls believe in their potential. There, she found not just a career, but a calling and a growing sense of her own voice and purpose. She often reflects on a pivotal moment during a group session early in her career, when she wrote down a goal: "attend a local open mic." It took time, but she eventually did just that and so much more.
At the end of 2022, she left her job, unsure of what came next but feeling a deep pull back to music. The pandemic had rekindled her creativity, and she began posting covers on social media and attending open mics. Finding supportive communities that helped her sharpen her guitar skills and rebuild her stage presence in a space that celebrated authenticity.
Now a full-time musician, Sidney is known for her ability to blend strength and softness in her sound. Her lyrics explore vulnerability, resilience, and the quiet moments in between earning her comparisons to artists like Maggie Rogers, Jade Bird, and Kacey Musgraves.
In addition to writing and performing, Sidney is a passionate supporter of the Austin songwriting scene. She hosts songwriter rounds and collaborates with Moondance Presents to organize monthly songwriter nights and an upcoming retreat focused on creative connection and community.
